After-school routine checklist
The hour after school is where most family evenings are won or lost. This is deliberately short: six things, in the order that keeps them from collapsing into each other.
First ten minutes
- Shoes and coat awaySame hook every day, or it never sticks.
- Lunchbox emptied into the sinkThe single habit that saves the most morning panic.
- Snack and waterBefore homework, not during it.
Before screens
- Bag unpacked — letters, forms, reading record
- Homework started, or a time agreed out loudAn agreed time counts. An unspoken intention does not.
- One chore doneSmall and the same each day beats big and occasional.
Before bed
- Bag repacked for tomorrow
- Kit checked against tomorrow’s calendarPE, swimming, instruments, trips.
- Anything that needs signing left where an adult will see it
